About

The Northern Virginia Cross Country/Track & Field Association was formed in the early 1990s by coaches and supporters, as a means of promoting high school cross country and track & field in the Northern Region, comprised predominantly of Fairfax Country, Arlington and Alexandria schools, in the AAA Division of the Virginia High School League. Over the years, the Association has grown, including current and past coaches, as well as officials, parents and other supporters.

Currently, the Officers of the NVCCTFA are:

  • Mike Kiernan (President)- Robinson Secondary
  • Mike Mangan (Vice President)- Lake Braddock Secondary
  • Dr. Matt Gilchrist (Secretary)- Chantilly HS
  • Mark Stripe (Treasurer)- Yorktown HS

In 2013-14, the VHSL expanded from three classifications, to six classifications, based predominantly on school population size. Each classification was divided into two regions each (Northern or Southern). Of the 29 schools from the former structure, 21 were classified as being members of Region 6A North, and were divided into three new conferences (Conference 5 (Concorde), Conference 6 (Liberty), Conference 7 (Patriot). The remaining 8 AAA schools were designated at Conference 13 (Capitol Conference) of Region 5A North.

In addition, for the first time, Prince Williams Schools were added to the Northern Region. The Cedar Run Conference (6A Conference 8) was added as the fourth conference to the 6A Northern Region. They remained in the 6A regions until re-classifications in 2019-20.

Any chance of posting old (i.e. 70s & 80s?) track & field records from the old districts? I’m looking for some of my dads’ stuff from the late 70s and he went to RE Lee. Thanks

Connor…these records are very definitely a work in progress. I actually do have alot of older district records from the 70’s/80’s, from hours of researching old Fairfax Journals on microfiche in the Virginia Room of the Fairfax County Library. Not all of them are complete, though. Because I also coach 3 seasons a year, I end up doing most of my new research on this during the summer, but it is my hope to get at least some of this up next summer for the old Great Falls, Potomac/Gunston/Northern districts. With this in mind, I am always looking for anyone who might be interested in helping out, too. Thanks for your interest.

      Matt Gilchrist
